Your Impact
We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and grow our Vehicle and Digital Services teams. You'll partner closely with product and engineering leadership to execute on our product vision and roadmap. You'll be responsible for building a high-performing team culture, driving technical excellence, and ensuring successful delivery across numerous concurrent projects.
This is a technical leadership role for someone who thrives at the intersection of hands-on execution, cross-functional collaboration, and technical leadership. You’ll remain deeply engaged in the technical work through code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical-decision making. As a fast-growing startup, this role offers significant opportunity to shape how we organize, execute, and deliver applications at scale. You'll play a key role in defining processes, building team structure, and establishing the practices that will support our continued growth

What You’ll Do
People Leadership
- Manage, coach, and develop a team of approximately 10 backend engineers, providing mentorship, technical direction, and career development.
- Own the full talent lifecycle: hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, provide actionable feedback, and create growth plans for team members at various skill levels.
- Build and maintain a collaborative, high-trust team culture grounded in candor and rigor.
- Manage staffing and resource allocation across multiple applications, services, and competing priorities.
Technical Leadership
- Partner with product and executive leadership to contribute to the backend engineering roadmap, translating strategic priorities into technical plans and leading your team to execute against them.
- Participate actively in code reviews to maintain code quality, enforce best practices, and share knowledge across the team.
- Contribute to architecture discussions and technical decision-making, guiding the team on patterns, standards, and scalable system design.
- Lead the design and development of APIs, microservices, and backend systems that power both customer-facing and internal products.
- Partner with product, data, and infrastructure teams to translate requirements into well-scoped technical solutions with clear tradeoffs.
- Drive the maturity and reliability of our cloud-based services, championing observability, performance, and security best practices.
- Stay current with backend technologies, frameworks, and cloud services, evaluating new tools and approaches that can improve team velocity and system quality.
Delivery & Operations
- Ensure consistent, high-quality delivery across multiple backend services and applications.
- Partner with product to ensure the team can deliver on priorities, manage expectations, and communicate progress, risks, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Identify and remove blockers that slow down the team; drive process improvements to increase team effectiveness and velocity.
- Oversee integrations with third-party systems and internal services, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and minimal disruption to operations and clients.
- Champion secure development practices and ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, particularly for government and enterprise customers.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define and standardize engineering KPIs and service health metrics, ensuring a consistent and trusted source of truth across the organization.
- Foster strong cross-functional collaboration across data, frontend, product, and operations teams.
- Travel domestically <10%.
Requirements Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or a related field; advanced degree a plus.
- 5+ years of experience as a backend software engineer — preferably building SaaS and/or B2B applications.
- Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams to deliver product outcomes
- 1–5 years of experience leading or managing engineering teams, with a proven track record of building and developing high-performing backend engineering teams.
- Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages (e.g., Java, C#/.NET) and experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
- Deep understanding of backend architecture, security, performance, and best practices, including experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
- Experience with the full software development lifecycle, from design to deployment, monitoring, and observability.
- Familiarity with AWS services to support cloud-native backend development and deployment.
- Experience managing competing priorities and resource allocation across multiple projects and services.
- Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and guide architectural decisions across distributed systems.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts clearly to diverse technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in GovTech, regulated industries, or compliance-sensitive environments (e.g., FedRAMP, SOC 2, GDPR).
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code concepts (e.g., Terraform) and cloud-native architectures.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Exposure to event-driven architectures, message queues, and streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka, SQS, SNS).
- Familiarity with Agile environments and workflow tools (e.g., Jira).
- Demonstrated success mentoring and developing engineers and contributing to team standards, documentation, and code reviews.

Salary Range
The expected salary range for this position is $165,000 to $200,000 annually . This is a good faith estimate, and final compensation may vary based on experience, skills, and geographic location.
