Job Description:
Duties:
The successful candidate will be responsible for analysis of customer supplied system specifications, decomposing the statements within such specifications into software requirements. The System Engineer will be responsible for identifying gaps between customer requirements and standard Onboard system hardware/software products. The System Engineer will be responsible for the creation of system specification document, system architecture including interface control design documents and trace system specification to the customer spec. The System Engineer will be responsible to assure that the hardware and software design satisfies the customer specification, creating or reviewing the test procedures and creating a requirements trace matrix from the test procedures back through the requirements and to the customer specifications. The System Engineer will be the primary technical interface to the customer throughout the life-cycle of the project and will act as technical liaison relative to the hardware/software development effort with other departments within Hitachi working on the same project.
Accountabilities:
- Analyzing drawings and documents that are specific to the project.
- Determining the best possible values for the parameters braking distances and times, speed limits in special modes of operation, various timer or delay values, worst-case dimensions.
- Developing map of all objects belonging to the system, including signals, switches, tracks, crossings, speed limit zones, and other special zones or objects.
- Responsible for Configuration control documents and maintains these documents throughout the lifecycle of the project.
- Generating the Onboard system requirements.
- Managing the software/hardware change process and reports as needed for any bugs or development needs.
- Revising and maintaining all changes to requirements software and hardware
- Creating large and complex Software Requirement Specifications (SRS) documents including Interface Control Design Documentation (ICDD) and Software Architecture Design (SAD) documents
- Creating a requirement Trace matrix from test procedures back to requirements and customer specifications
- Knowledge of requirement management systems, software configuration management tools, DOORS and MS Office Suite.
Specific Experience/Skills Required:
- 8-10 years of experience as System Engineer in an industry with safety related process
- Strong ability to read and analyze sets of technical documents
- Strong ability to understand large and complex sets of rules
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize large amounts of information to understand the implications of that information
- Experience using computing tools such as Python or MATLAB for modeling or simulation of physical systems
- Demonstrated mastery of calculus, differential equations, introductory physics, probability, and numerical optimization
- Ability to write and maintain technical documents
- Ability to explain physical, mathematical, and logical systems in writing and in technical presentations
- Eagerness to ask questions and to engage colleagues for the purpose of gaining and sharing knowledge
- Eagerness to support an inclusive team through recognition of the contributions and value of other team members and through open and honest communication
Desired Skills/Knowledge:
- Familiarity with railway interlocking principles
- Familiarity with the IEEE 1474.1 safe braking model
- Experience with software configuration management and familiarity with one or more version control tool (e.g. CVS, Subversion, Git, etc.)
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
