The FinOps Project Manager (FPM) in this remote contract role is a strategic and execution-focused leader responsible for driving alignment, visibility, and delivery across FinOps initiatives spanning Finance, Product, Engineering, and Business teams. This role combines technical program management with financial accountability and agile execution, emphasizing cloud cost optimization, cross-functional collaboration, and the implementation of FinOps best practices.

  • They translate high-level organizational goals into structured, measurable, and actionable initiatives, while maintaining rigorous standards for communication, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Additionally, FPMs play a key role in identifying cost-saving opportunities, driving cloud financial efficiency, and ensuring teams are equipped with the tools and processes needed to make informed, data-driven decisions.
  • This role is critical to improving cloud cost transparency, financial accountability, and operational efficiency across the organization.
  • By partnering closely with Finance, Product, Engineering and Business teams, the FinOps Project Manager ensures cloud budgets are well-understood, optimization opportunities are identified, and cloud consumption aligns with strategic business goals.
  • This position directly contributes to long-term scalability, modernization, and cost governance efforts.

FinOps Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, execution, and successful delivery of FinOps initiatives in support of organization goals.
  • Establish and maintain KPIs related to cloud financial health, including tagging compliance and cost-per-workload metrics.
  • Promote awareness of cloud economics and foster ownership of cost efficiency across Finance, Product, Engineering and Business teams.
  • Develop structured reporting to support leadership decision-making and enhance visibility into cloud expenditures.
  • Monitor and report on cloud budgets, anomalies, usage patterns, and forecasts to ensure alignment with project and organizational priorities.
  • Help teams understand the value of FinOps recommendations, securing buy-in and integrating them into product roadmaps and team backlogs.
  • Contribute to the evolution of FinOps processes, tools, and governance frameworks.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes, improve reporting clarity, and enhance cloud cost governance.
  • Leverage tools like AWS Cost Explorer, Cloudability, and AWS anomaly detection to identify, investigate, and resolve unusual cloud cost activities while implementing preventative measures

General Responsibilities
  • Lead project planning, backlog refinement, sprint execution, and post-mortem ceremonies for one or more SRE teams.
  • Proactively manage Jira hygiene and workflows—ensuring that tickets are well-defined, estimated, assigned, and properly linked to Epics, Themes, and organizational priorities.
  • Track and report progress on engineering and cost-focused initiatives using dashboards, Confluence documentation, and recurring status updates.
  • Facilitate regular team ceremonies and leadership reviews, keeping meetings focused, data-driven, and outcome-oriented.
  • Support compliance, access control, and decommissioning efforts across cloud and on-prem systems.
  • Act as a steward of engineering time—minimizing context-switching, streamlining workflows, and closing the loop on stale or duplicative work.
  • Contribute to shared documentation and knowledge management across the program.
  • Continuously improve team processes through retrospectives and experimentation.

Qualifications
  • English proficiency and proven ability to build relationships across teams.
  • Available to work 9am-5pm, US Eastern Time.
  • 5+ years of experience in technical program management, project management, or product ownership roles within finops or software engineering/development teams.
  • Experience with cloud financial tools such as AWS Cost Explorer or Cloudability.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and drive consensus across teams.
  • Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum principles and Jira/Confluence best practices (e.g., Dashboards, JQL, Macros).
  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes, ECS, Terraform).
  • Foundational knowledge of AWS services, billing constructs, and cost optimization techniques such as rightsizing and reserved instance planning.
  • Strong analytical skills; proficiency in Excel or SQL is preferred.
  • Comfortable analyzing data to drive decisions and communicating findings clearly to both engineers and executives.
  • High attention to detail, follow-through, and accountability.
  • Empathy and communication skills to work with diverse, distributed engineering teams.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience working within a FinOps practice
  • Exposure to cloud financial governance, FinOps principles, or cost accountability frameworks.
  • Experience working with Finance, Product, Engineering and Business teams.
  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or FinOps Certified Practitioner.
  • Experience with multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP or OCI).
