The primary focus of our Merchant Underwriter is to analyze merchant applicants from various business types for North credit card payment processing and merchant services. This role within the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) team provides an optimal experience to our sales partners and merchants within the payment processing industry. This role will help drive multiple initiatives, including the review of merchant application submissions; providing additional layers of review and dissection to find account solutions, driving increased submission volumes; and providing review expertise for merchant relationships.

The Merchant Underwriter will possess the soft skills necessary to be good ambassadors of North with external parties, including sales partners and business owners. The ideal candidate will be able to complete tasks quickly and efficiently, while also resolving escalations that arise within the purview of underwriting, and act as an expert related to North's underwriting systems and processes, allowing them to diagnose the root cause of an issue, and then implement the correct solution.

What you'll do:

  • Review and analyze new submissions, auto approved submissions, and graduated underwriting submissions that sales partners and merchants submit to North.
  • Provide all sales partners with a communication channel via phone support as well as an additional layer of review and discretion to find a solution for accounts that have been pended, declined, or withdrawn, these smart exceptions should lead to more approvals.
  • Conduct commercial credit application reviews up to $250,000 in total exposure; make verbal and written recommendations to management for reviews above assigned credit risk exposure authority consistent with North’s risk appetite using business documentation received from multiple sources.
  • Monitor the phone queue taking inbound calls and making outbound calls to sales parents and merchants.
  • Analyze a wide variety of applicants and business types in multiple credit card processing environments (both card present and non-card present such as mail order or internet applicants where risk is higher), wide range of exposure amounts, using standard and non-standard documentation
  • Drive increased submission volume by exploring options to approve submissions and maintaining positive relationships with North’s sales partners.
  • Understands NAB’s underwriting policies, procedures, and standards to ensure that submissions are managed accordingly.
  • Review and make recommendations to update department policies and procedures based on changing industry trends or process adjustments
  • Assist management with new submission volume when there is an overflow in various key pipelines
  • Work collectively with other ERM department personnel to obtain historical data and feedback regarding assigned accounts
  • Other duties as may be assigned by Underwriting leadership, including ad hoc requests.

What we need from you:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum 2 years of merchant underwriting experience in the bank card payment processing industry.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills and emotional intelligence to be able to manage relationships with applicants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships.
  • Must be comfortable and confident in handling a position of authority when making underwriting decisions, as well as executing accurate judgment in regards to interactions with sales partners and merchants over the phone and through email.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and handle combination of relationships with applicants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships).
  • Critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem solving skills with the ability to independently solve problems using data.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, management, vendors, sales agents, and merchants.
  • Team-oriented individual with a positive attitude who enjoys working with and for others.
  • Ability to adapt priorities for peak periods to ensure consistency of service levels for sales partners and merchants.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule in support of departmental needs.

How to stand out (Preferred):

  • Two (2) Years of Sales Support or Customer Service Experience.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $70,000

Pay within this range varies by work location and on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We look forward to discussing your salary expectations and our full total rewards offerings throughout the interview process.
