About this role:
We are seeking a seasoned, hands-on, forward-thinking Infrastructure Engineering Director to establish and lead a foundational infrastructure engineering function within the Wealth & Investment Management Technology (WIMT) organization. This role will operate at the intersection of infrastructure strategy and application strategy, ensuring our WIMT solutions are designed and architected to meet the evolving needs of the business and technology. The ideal candidate will bring deep infrastructure expertise while demonstrating a strong understanding of application performance characteristics, dependency identification, and business context. The successful candidate will not only be responsible for delivering these capabilities but also for building a high-performing team to execute on this vision. The role will also engage with various Wells Fargo stakeholders and be at the forefront of the modernization of our platforms, utilities, data centers, cloud migrations and integration of AI and Agentic AI into horizontal infrastructure capabilities.
This is a highly technical leadership role requiring deep infrastructure expertise, experience leading engineering teams, and a collaborative mindset to engage and influence laterally across the organization. The Infrastructure Engineering Director will serve as the strategic link between infrastructure and application teams—ensuring that the platforms we build are resilient, efficient, and purpose-fit for our business. While a deep understanding in one or more infrastructure disciplines (e.g., compute, network, containers, or automation) is essential, the individual is not expected to be an expert in every domain, they will need to demonstrate breadth in expertise and ability to adapt.
In this role, you will:
- Manage a team of engineering managers and engineering leads
- Focus on delivering commitments aligned to enterprise strategic priorities
- Build support for strategies with business and technology leaders
- Guide development of actionable roadmaps and plans
- Identify opportunities and strategies for continuous improvement of software engineering practices
- Provide oversight to software craftsmanship, security, availability, resilience, and scalability of solutions developed by the teams or third party providers
- Identify financial management and strategic resourcing
- Set risk management guidelines and partner with stakeholders to implement key risk initiatives
- Develop strategies for hiring engineering talent
- Lead implementation of projects and encourage engineering innovation
- Collaborate and influence all levels of professionals including more experienced managers
- Interface with external agencies, regulatory bodies or industry forums
- Manage allocation of people and financial resources for Technology Strategic Leadership
- Develop and guide a culture of talent development to meet business objectives and strategy
- Understand infrastructure roadmaps and identify implications for WIMT
- Influence infrastructure functions based on product strategy and WIM roadmap
- Manage intake for infrastructure requests, and ensure outbound
- Educate product owners on upcoming infrastructure changes and impact on their products
- Understand business implications of infrastructure changes - client segment, channel, end-to-end process flows
- Lead a cross-functional team of engineers on strategic initiatives
- Establish engineering oversight and performance metrics for vendor-supported services to drive accountability and consistent outcomes across the infrastructure stack.
- Contribute to white papers and business cases on transformation strategies
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of Technology Strategic Leadership experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, platform architecture, or SRE within complex enterprise environments.
- 4+ years of management or leadership experience
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven leadership in infrastructure design and modernization efforts, preferably in financial services or other regulated industries.
- Strong knowledge of networking and segmentation principles, particularly in hybrid environments.
- Deep understanding of platform and/or network engineering, infrastructure as code (IaC), and CI/CD principles.
- Familiarity with AI and Agentic AI concepts
- Experience with CMDB tooling, configuration drift detection, and systems of record reconciliation.
- Exceptional collaboration skills with a history of working closely with application teams to bridge infrastructure and business priorities.
- Expertise with resiliency patterns, observability, and zero-trust network architecture.
- Strong familiarity of Red Hat, ServiceNow CMDB, and Terraform/Ansible automation.
- Understanding of financial services risk and compliance considerations.
